City Council Opposes Proposed Railroad Crossing Closure

The city council passed a resolution opposing the proposed closure of a railroad crossing on 63rd Avenue, west of Howard Boulevard and US Highway 81. The railroad tracks are owned by Union Pacific, with operations by Nebraska Central (owned by Rio Grand). Rio Grand requested the closure through the Nebraska Department of Transportation. The city opposes this due to limited crossings, potentially longer emergency response times, cutting off access, and the crossing's role as an emergency route for flooding or levee failure. The county board of supervisors has also passed a similar resolution. The city's resolution and the county's resolution will be forwarded to the DOT.

City Releases Security on Quail Meadows LLC Lots for Development Sales

The council authorized the Mayor and City Administrator to execute deeds of reconveyance or partial deeds for real estate held as security from Quail Meadows LLC. This action relates to an LB840 loan, where Quail Meadows LLC is developing property near the transfer station. As Quail Meadows LLC needs to sell some lots under contract, the city is releasing its security on those specific lots. They will still make their LB840 loan payments as agreed, and the city retains security on other lots. This process allows the Mayor and City Administrator to release lots as they are sold, similar to a previous arrangement with New Hope, avoiding repeated council approvals for each lot sale.

Loop River South Bridges Project Update and Traffic Concerns

The council discussed the Nebraska Department of Transportation's Loop River South Bridges Project. The project remains on schedule, with girders in place and work progressing on abutments and approaches. Decking and steel work are underway, with a projected first deck pour in mid-July. The council also addressed past issues with the northbound lanes, including a traffic hump, machinery failure, and asphalt plant operability problems, with ongoing cleanup expected.
