Cleveland City Council Work Session 06-22-26
Published: Jun 22, 2026
City Funds Depositories, Approves Audit Contract, and Reappoints Utilities Authority Member
The council will designate depositories for the city of Cleveland's funds. Additionally, they will authorize the mayor to sign an engagement letter and contract with HHM for the city's audit for the fiscal year July 1st to June 30th. The council will also reappoint Joe Kate to the Cleveland Utilities Authority for an additional 4-year term.
City to Apply for Firehouse Subs Public Safety Grant for Extrication Equipment
City staff are authorized to submit an application for the 2026 Firehouse Subs Public Safety Grant. The memo indicates the requested equipment is for heavy extrication and trench shoring, which the department currently lacks.
City of Cleveland Invited to Join Fire Truck Antitrust Litigation
The council heard a presentation regarding participation in the fire truck antitrust litigation. This litigation aims to recover damages from major fire apparatus manufacturers who allegedly monopolized the market since 2016, colluding to charge inflated prices and delay deliveries. The city is invited to join this multi-district class action, which would be handled on a contingency basis. The presentation highlighted that a truck that cost $589,000 in 2020 now costs $1.2 million, and ladder trucks have doubled in price. Participation would not incur upfront costs, and legal fees would only be paid if damages are recovered. The city has purchased six fire trucks since 2016 from manufacturers like Oshkosh and Pierce. The litigation is consolidated in Wisconsin, with lawsuits filed in Missouri, Los Angeles, and Baltimore.
Council Discusses Parks, Cleanup, and Greenway Amenities
Councilman Essis noted significant community feedback on the growth of cleanup efforts, emphasizing its importance and the need for staff to gather information and potentially conduct surveys. Councilman Cassidy inquired about clearing creek bank growth along Rolling Hills natural park, from Candies Creek to Freewill, and Councilman May reported positively on the progress and quality of work at Tinsley Park, largely completed by staff. Vice Mayor Webb raised concerns about the lack of trash cans on the Candies Creek Greenway, which are on order but backordered, and acknowledged ongoing efforts to check on delivery status.
Ordinance Regarding Delivery Methods Up for Final Passage
The council will vote on the final passage of Ordinance 2648, which amends Chapter 4 by adding Section 5.414 concerning delivery methods. This ordinance was previously passed at the last meeting.
