City Promotes Use of Apps for Information and Issue Reporting
The city encourages residents to utilize the Athens, Ohio City Source app and Nixle for timely information and to report issues. The City Source app allows users to report corrective actions needed in the city and is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. Nixle allows for customizable alerts by texting '45701' to '888-777', enabling users to receive notifications on various city matters, including severe weather, criminal activities, or missing persons, based on their preferences. Both apps are free to use.
Athens Comprehensive Plan Update Underway with Extensive Public Engagement Planned
The Athens Comprehensive Plan is being updated, with a significant period of public engagement planned from summer through winter. The process will involve public meetings, open houses, neighborhood meetings, and stakeholder groups. Discussion topics include culture, values, housing, mobility, recreation, environment, and sustainability. The updated plan is expected to be presented in the summer of 2027, with findings reviewed in February 2027 and draft plan development in spring 2027. City Planner Megan Jennings is leading the effort.
Proclamation Honors Amateur Radio Operators for Emergency Communications Role
A proclamation was read recognizing the vital role of amateur radio operators in emergency communications. They provide essential support for national, state, and local preparedness plans, especially during severe weather events. Ohio has over 30,000 licensed amateur radio operators who donate their time and expertise. June 27th and 28th, 2026, have been designated as Amateur Radio Operators Appreciation Day, coinciding with the Amateur Radio Field Day for emergency communication preparedness exercises. An exhibition showcasing their communication prowess will occur at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 27th, at the Red Cross building.
Summer Construction Projects to Cause Traffic Disruptions and Detours
Summer construction projects will impact traffic throughout the city and into the fall. Some sites will have flaggers and one-way traffic, while others will reduce lanes to two-way traffic. Significant detours are expected for a project on the 682 stretch of highway off US 33, slated for 2027. This project involves rebuilding on- and off-ramps due to failing concrete on a 50-year-old highway. The majority of this highway work is anticipated in spring and summer of the following year (2027).
City Council on July Recess; Planning Commission to Meet July 1st
The City Council is on recess for the entire month of July, resuming sessions on August 3rd. Due to numerous ongoing activities during the recess, a special committee meeting session may be scheduled for August 3rd. The Planning Commission is scheduled to meet on July 1st at 12:00 p.m. in Council Chambers. The mayor is also taking a vacation next week, returning the week after.
