Arvada City Council Approves Release of Second Fund Advance to Arvada Center

The Arvada City Council approved Resolution 20-6046, authorizing the release of the second half of previously approved advance funds to the Arvada Center in the amount of $812,000. This follows a resolution from August 2025 (25-070) which appropriated a one-year advance of the city's cash contribution to bolster the Arvada Center's financial sustainability, to be repaid over ten years. The initial resolution released half the funds and directed a consultant study of the organization's operations, requiring the CEO to report findings before the second half of the advance. The study's recommendations, presented to the council, focus on investing in organizational infrastructure, activating underutilized assets, strengthening contributed revenue capacity, and building for long-term financial resilience. Staff determined the Arvada Center has complied with the council's intent. Councilmember Lovisone recused themselves from voting due to potential conflict of interest from current employment with the Arvada Center. The motion to release the funds passed 6 to 0 (with Lovisone recused). Council members praised the Arvada Center as a regional asset and urged community support.

Arvada Council Approves QuikTrip Rezoning and Fuel Island Modification with Conditions

The Arvada City Council considered a rezoning application (CB 26-017) and a major modification request (CB 26-018) for a QuikTrip facility at 9295 Matterhorn Lane. The rezoning seeks to change the zoning from Planned Unit Development (PUD) to Commercial General (CG) for a 9.47-acre parcel, with plans for a QuikTrip on the northwestern lot. The CG district allows for neighborhood retail services and has a maximum height of 45ft, a reduction from the current PUD zoning. The application met rezoning criteria related to comprehensive plan consistency, intent of the zone district, sufficient facilities, environmental impacts, and compatibility with adjacent properties. A conceptual site plan was presented showing the QuikTrip store and canopy, with circulation designed for various vehicles. A major modification request to allow ten single fuel islands (instead of the code-limited five double islands) was also discussed, aiming to optimize site configuration and traffic flow, despite a longer canopy along Highway 72. Mitigation measures proposed include enhanced landscaping with native plants, enhanced architectural design, a "Welcome to Arvada" sign, and a fully enclosed trash enclosure. Concerns were raised by the public and council regarding wildlife impacts (Preble's jumping mouse, elk, bears), potential groundwater contamination from underground storage tanks, and traffic impacts on Highway 72 and 93. The applicant addressed these by detailing their tank monitoring systems and mitigation strategies, including enclosed trash areas and willingness to explore animal-proof containers and lighting controls. Discussions also touched on EV charging capabilities and bus stop connectivity. Council members sought clarification on traffic movements, CDOT's role, and the long-term impact of the development. The council approved both the rezoning and the major modification with conditions, including additional landscaping, welcome signage, enhanced canopy architecture, and animal-proof trash enclosures.

Arvada Council Approves QuikTrip Rezoning and Fuel Island Expansion with Mitigation Conditions

The Arvada City Council held a hearing regarding QuikTrip's application for rezoning (CB 26-017) and a major modification (CB 26-018) for a facility at 9295 Matterhorn Lane. The rezoning aims to change the property from Planned Unit Development (PUD) to Commercial General (CG), allowing for a fueling station and convenience store. A major modification was requested to permit ten single fuel islands, exceeding the code's limit of five double islands, to better suit the lot's irregular shape and improve traffic flow. Public comment focused on environmental concerns, including wildlife impacts from nearby reserves, potential groundwater contamination from underground storage tanks, and traffic safety on Highways 72 and 93. The applicant presented mitigation strategies such as enhanced landscaping with native plants, "Welcome to Arvada" signage, architectural improvements to the canopy, and enclosed trash facilities. The council discussed these concerns, particularly regarding lighting pollution, animal-proofing trash receptacles, and traffic management. The council ultimately approved the rezoning and the major modification, incorporating conditions related to landscaping, signage, canopy design, animal-proof trash enclosures, and lighting controls to mitigate potential adverse impacts. The vote was 7 to 0 for both items.

Arvada Honors Cameron Holland Family for Adopt a Street Program Contributions

The Arvada City Council received a Certificate of Recognition for the Cameron Holland family for their dedication to the Adopt a Street program. The family started volunteering after Cameron Holland's death in 2019, choosing to honor him by cleaning streets. They have since cultivated a community of volunteers, leading cleanups along West 72nd Avenue. The city recognized their dedication and contribution to the Arvada community. The family expressed gratitude, noting that the program helped them channel their grief positively and connect with the community, finding that contributing to society and making Arvada a better place has helped their grief journey. They also thanked their "number one volunteers," the Cansenarro family, for their consistent support. The family highlighted that Cameron Holland's scholarship recipient, Jessica Cansenarro, graduated and will attend Metropolitan State University.
