City Council Discusses Proposed Data Center, Schedules Public Comment Session
The City Council held a discussion on a proposed small-scale data center by LightEdge. This meeting was informational, with no action taken, to gather input from staff, the applicant, and the community. The council asked questions regarding utility usage (water, wastewater treatment), electricity consumption and its impact on ratepayers, the number of employees, and the reasoning for choosing Ames. A future special meeting is scheduled for June 30th to receive public comment and feedback before any potential council action. The council is also considering the broader implications of data centers in Ames and aims to be proactive in developing policies for potential future proposals, even though no other data centers are currently considering Ames. An additional update from the city attorney on data centers is expected on July 14th.
