City of Wickliffe Council Regular Meeting June 22, 2026

Wickliff Council Addresses Short-Term Rental Concerns and Contractor Disputes
Residents expressed concerns about short-term rentals (Airbnb) within the city, citing issues with noise, parking, and lack of permits. One resident detailed a dispute with a contractor over a poorly constructed driveway and the perceived inaction from the city to resolve the issue. Another resident, Dave Lawrence, highlighted issues with an active Airbnb next door, noting that five such rentals exist in the city, with none reportedly certified or permitted. He urged the council to re-examine the ordinance, as it does not seem to be effectively protecting property values or controlling rental density. The council acknowledged the enforcement challenges due to the newness of the ordinance and the limitations of the building department, assuring residents that the administration is working on enforcement strategies and that the issue might be revisited.
Wickliff City Council Honors Retiring Sergeant Petri, Welcomes New Officers
Sergeant Isaac Petrich was honored for his nearly 26 years of service to the Wickliff Police Department upon his retirement. He began his career in 2000 and was promoted to sergeant in 2018, taking on additional duties including commanding auxiliary officers, implementing Ohio collaborative standards, and managing the department's website. Throughout his career, Sergeant Petrich received numerous commendations and participated in community events. He will be relocating to Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his wife Karen to serve as senior pastor of the Ebenezer Lutheran Brethren Church. Two new police officers, Kirsten Lamscina and John Anervitz, were sworn into the Wickliff Police Department.
Wickliff Finance Report Shows Increased Fund Carryover but Concerns Over Income Tax and Interest Earnings
The Finance Director reported that the general fund carryover as of May 2026 is $8.7 million, an increase from $7.6 million in May 2025. However, income tax collections are down by $224,000 (4.48%), which is a concern as it's the largest revenue source. Interest income from STAR Ohio is also lower than in previous years, currently at 3.82% compared to 4.48% last year and 5.45% in 2024. The council also discussed a $60,000 grant for a retention basin study at Townman's Gardens, with the city's share being $15,000. This study aims to assess the feasibility and potential costs of alleviating flooding in the north end of town, with potential costs for the basin itself estimated between $500,000 and $1 million.
Wickliff Approves Pavement Repair Bids and Discusses Fire Department Equipment Needs
The council approved bids for two contracts related to the 2026 pavement repair program. Contract B, for asphalt resurfacing, was awarded to Rin Paving (dba Ronak Incorporated) for $1,024,427, which was below the engineer's estimate of $1,100,000. Contract C, for concrete slab replacement, was awarded to TC Construction Company, Inc. for $70,580, also below the engineer's estimate of $85,000. Both projects are partially funded by grants. Additionally, the council discussed the need for a new ladder truck for the fire department, noting the current truck is 27 years old and exceeding recommended service life, and that this is being considered within a 5-year capital plan.
Wickliff City Council Approves 12-Month Moratorium on Data Centers
The council discussed and approved an ordinance establishing a 12-month moratorium on data centers within the city. This decision followed a recommendation from the Legislation and Welfare Committee, with Councilman Dorski being the sole objector. The ordinance aims to provide the city council, building department, and planning commission with time to investigate data centers and develop qualifications or checklists. Concerns were raised about the lack of suitable space for such large complexes and their potential environmental impact, though some argued that even small data centers could have an impact. A specific potential location at the southeast corner of Warding and Lakeland was mentioned.
