The policy aims to ensure government transparency and broaden public access to meetings.
Resident Urges Council Opposition to Data Centers and BESS Projects
Nathan Chen, a lifelong resident, expressed opposition to proposed data centers and battery energy storage systems (BESS) near Walnut's borders, citing potential risks to beauty, safety, and public health. He referenced the Marichi Best Project and another proposed facility on Marcellin Drive. Chen warned of long-term noise and EMF exposure, hazards from hydrogen fluoride, increased utility costs, and water scarcity. He urged the council to send a letter of opposition unless an environmental impact report (EIR) is conducted and to involve regional bodies like the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments.
Southern California Edison Updates on Public Safety Power Shutoff Plans
Tiffany Tran from Southern California Edison provided an update on Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS), emphasizing that they are a tool of last resort used to prevent catastrophic wildfires. She noted that due to wildfire season, PSPS events may become more frequent, longer, and impact more customers. Tran thanked the city for its partnership and coordination in ensuring resident and customer safety.
Volunteers and Law Enforcement Honored for Service to Walnut
Council members and residents expressed gratitude for the service of volunteers and law enforcement personnel. An annual service dinner recognized volunteers from the Walnut Station Sheriff's Department, including volunteers on patrol, desk staff, reserves, and explorers. Council members highlighted that these volunteers save the community significant financial resources and enhance public safety. Recognition was also given to individual volunteers, such as Ann Hobbs.
