Council Advances LHOST Initiative and Approves Key Board Appointments
The council approved the introduction of a local act for the Georgia General Assembly to implement the local option homestead sales tax (LHOST). This measure is time-sensitive and requires partnership with the county to appear on the November ballot. The council also discussed various board appointments, reappointing members to the Historic Preservation Commission, Tiffan Tree Board, Keep Tiff Beautiful, and Urban Redevelopment Agency. Appointments to the Tiffan Tourism board were delayed for further discussion, and new members were appointed to the Downtown Development Authority.
City Council Approves FY2027 Budget Amidst Positive Financial Indicators
The council approved the fiscal year 2027 budget. Larry provided a financial update for the first 11 months of the current fiscal year, noting that total revenues and expenditures are in line with projections. Property taxes are slightly behind, but this is attributed to appeals. Local option sales tax is stable, and building permits are significantly up, indicating a strong local economy. Expenditures are running under budget, with an expectation to break even by the end of June. Enterprise funds for water, sewer, gas, and solid waste are also performing well, with solid waste expected to improve due to recent tip and fee increases.
