Summit's Department of Community Programs Unveils Packed Summer Schedule
The discussion covered various summer programs and events organized by the Department of Community Programs (DCP), including 'Screen on the Green' movie nights, concerts, and the upcoming Fourth of July celebration. 'Screen on the Green' will feature movies like 'Airbud World Cup,' 'K-pop Demon Hunters,' 'Hoppers,' and 'Zootopia 2,' with a special football-themed movie night at Tatlock Field following the ribbon cutting for new lights. Concerts will be held on Monday nights, featuring bands like Twilight Disciples, Element K, Brian Kirk and the Jerks, Shorty Long and the Jersey Horns, The D-Buzz, and Honest Wagner. National Night Out will take place on Tuesday, August 3rd. The Fourth of July celebration at Memorial Field will include a flag-raising ceremony, food court, decorated bike contest, live music from Moore Stars, Poogie Woogie American Dance Party, Sensational Soul Cruisers, a magic show, Owls and Lions, and Daddy Puff, culminating in fireworks. Road closures around Memorial Field will be in effect for the event. The DCP relies on corporate sponsorships for funding these events, with a Recreation Trust Fund available as a stopgap. Additionally, the Summit Aquatic Center and Municipal Golf Course are open for the summer, offering swim lessons, golf lessons, and swim team activities. Camp has also commenced with over 450 children and 80 counselors. The department emphasizes inclusivity, ensuring programs and facilities are accessible to all residents, including those needing financial assistance.
Summit Discusses Playground Updates and Future Park Improvements
The discussion covered updates and future plans for several playgrounds in Summit, including Maybe Playground, Tatlock Playground, and Memorial Playground. Maybe Playground is nearing completion with ADA-accessible and intergenerational features, funded by grants from LRIG, the Summit Foundation, and Green Acres, totaling $1.6 million. Tatlock Playground has received updates, with remaining elements to be completed in the fall, supported by $150,000 in capital budget funds. Memorial Playground is slated for a potential revamp, with a survey underway to gather community input before launching a fundraising campaign, and an estimated cost of $500,000 for a full renovation. Additionally, plans are in motion for a new playground in East Summit at Bryant Park, addressing a lack of accessible play spaces during school hours. The overall process for playground updates begins with a Master Plan, followed by prioritization, community input, and capital budget allocation. The Parks and Recreation department is also soliciting community feedback on desired park improvements, such as dog parks, enclosed basketball courts, and traveling rings, to inform future capital budget planning.
