Madison Police Department Reinstates Bicycle Helmet Program and Achieves Third Consecutive Accreditation

Downtown Development Commission Announces Meeting Schedule, Market Details, and World Cup Watch Party Plans
The Downtown Development Commission (DDC) announced that their next meeting is scheduled for July 16th at 7:15 p.m. in the Hartley Dodge Memorial Building, and the public is invited. The June meeting was canceled. The 2026 Madison Farm and Artisan Market runs Saturdays through December 2nd, with closures on July 4th and during Bottle Hill Day. The DDC is also planning a World Cup watch party after obtaining a public viewing license from FIFA.
Madison Seeks Grants for Road Improvements and Drew Forest Acquisition
The Borough of Madison is pursuing an NJDOT municipal aid application for $295,000 to fund the Old Greenhouse Lane milling and overlay project. Additionally, the borough is seeking federal, state, and county grant funds totaling $17.5 million for the purchase of the Drew Forest property, which has a total purchase price of $23.8 million. The electric department is also utilizing county cooperative bids for signalization improvements and traffic signal improvements, with approved contracts not to exceed $60,000 and $55,000 respectively. Other grant-related activities include securing Green Acres funding for the Drew Forest purchase and potentially additional municipal open space funding.
Council Approves Minutes, Discusses Upcoming Anniversary, and Receives Public Input
The meeting included approval of minutes from May 11th and May 27th, 2026, both regular and executive sessions. Acting Mayor Forte acknowledged the privilege of serving in a representative democracy and preparing for the nation's 250th anniversary. The council received emails supporting a ban on gas-powered leaf blowers and a request to display wartime heroes. Recognition was given to Borough Director of Communications Michael Pelsi for his efforts. Public comments were invited on agenda items and other subjects.
Council Approves $60,000 for Signalization Improvements
Ordinance 28-2026 was adopted, appropriating $60,000 from the Electric Capital Improvement Fund for signalization improvements. The ordinance passed with a unanimous roll call vote from all council members present.
