Morristown Mayor and Council Update on Events, Business Openings, and Community Initiatives
Mayor and Council provided updates on various town events and initiatives. They celebrated the Morristown High School graduation, recognized Central Takaria (61 South Street) for its authentic Mexican cuisine and recognition by the Mexican Consulate, and the grand opening of 'NJoy' (48 Washington Street), a standalone non-alcoholic bottle shop. The Mayor also highlighted upcoming events such as the July 4th reading of the Declaration of Independence at Washington Headquarters, the mobile DMV unit visiting town hall on July 5th, and a ribbon cutting for a new playground at Victor Wood Hall Park on July 13th. He also discussed the county's road maintenance practices, traffic signal timing limitations, and the financial strain caused by nonprofits. Council members echoed appreciation for community programs and acknowledged the importance of pedestrian and bicycling safety.
Residents Advocate for Traffic Calming Measures on Morris Avenue
During the public hearing, residents Bill Burn, Rebecca Feldman, and David Cook provided comments regarding traffic safety and infrastructure. Bill Burn thanked the DOT, Mars County, and the town council for the installation of a new traffic light. Rebecca Feldman and David Cook focused on Morris Avenue, advocating for traffic calming measures. They noted that despite being narrowed from three lanes to two lanes over 20 years ago, driver speed remains too high, creating a sense of a highway and making it difficult for pedestrians to cross. They proposed using epoxy paint with gravel for visual cues to create perceived curb extensions at crosswalks, citing Manhattan's use of similar techniques. Larry Cohen also supported these measures, emphasizing the need to slow traffic and make the area more residential-friendly for alternative transportation users. Council members acknowledged these concerns, with Councilman Hone and Councilwoman Foster noting the town's efforts and the need to improve pedestrian and bicycling safety, especially with ongoing development like the train station.
Morristown Council Introduces Ordinances on Instructional Kitchens, Compensation, and Parking
The town council introduced several ordinances related to land development and compensation. Ordinance 0-8-2026 permits and regulates instructional kitchens for cooking classes, which was introduced and referred to the planning board for consistency review. Ordinances 0-9-2026 and 0-20-2026 concern compensation for elected officials and management non-union positions, respectively, both introduced and set for public hearing. Ordinance 0-21-2026 clarifies vehicle weight limitations based on gross vehicle weight rating for parking restrictions on certain trucks, vehicles, and trailers, also introduced and set for public hearing. Additionally, resolutions R-18-2026 through R-121-26 were adopted.
Positive Pathways Seeks Funding for Student Counseling Services
Positive Pathways, formerly known as Team Pride, presented to the town council about their free community-based counseling program for students. Kathleen Highland, a founder, highlighted the program's 24-hour availability and its expansion beyond schools to homes and other locations. Marlene Freebo, director, stated that the program has supported thousands of youth and families over 30 years, offering counseling within schools and at mutually agreed upon locations to eliminate transportation and financial barriers. The program has conducted over 3,000 counseling sessions and 840 collaborative contacts in the last four months. Michelle Mangi, a board member, emphasized the program's positive community impact, noting that a well-adjusted student contributes to a better classroom, school, and community. The organization is seeking funding to meet the growing demand for their services.
