City Council Introduces Resolutions and Ordinances for Mineral Leases, Property Declarations, and Zoning Changes
Councilman Green moved for the introduction of Resolution 66, authorizing a request to the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources and Louisiana State Mineral and Energy Board to seek public bids for an oil, gas, and mineral lease on city-owned property in District A, and to execute the lease. Councilman Butcher seconded the motion. These items have been introduced. Councilman Green also moved for the introduction of Ordinance 65, repealing Section 26-66 of the code of ordinances, and Ordinance 66, declaring certain city property surplus. Councilman Butcher seconded these motions. Ordinance 67, 68, and 69, concerning zoning map amendments, were also introduced and moved for introduction by Councilman Green, seconded by Councilman Butcher.
City Council Approves Amendments to Capital Improvement and Airport Enterprise Budgets
The City Council passed Ordinance 63, amending the 2026 capital improvement budget and appropriating funds. They also passed Ordinance 64, amending the 2026 Airport Enterprise Fund budget. Both ordinances passed with seven votes.
The Times Selected as Official City Journal; Councilwoman Taylor Abstains from Vote
The City Council passed Resolution 56, selecting The Times as the official journal of the city for the period of July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Councilwoman Taylor abstained from the vote due to a conflict of interest, as her daughter works for the publication. The resolution passed with six votes in favor and one abstention. Councilman Green moved for introduction, and Madam Vice Chair seconded.
City Council Approves Amendments to Capital Improvement and Airport Budgets
Ordinance 63 was passed, amending the 2026 capital improvement budget and appropriating funds. Ordinance 64 was passed, amending the 2026 Airport Enterprise Fund budget. Both ordinances passed with seven votes.
Sci-Port Discovery Center Reports Strong ROI on $15,000 Grant for Exhibitions
Diane Clark, Executive Director of Sci-Port Discovery Center, reported on the success of a $15,000 grant that funded a natural histories exhibition and a one-day bug bazaar. The exhibition, which highlighted wildlife illustration and included live animal collections, saw nearly 12,000 guests. The Bug Bazaar, held on April 11th, featured activities like a scavenger hunt and animal encounters, with a special appearance by YouTube personality Coyote Peterson. The event generated an approximate return on investment of $42,000, with Sci-Port collecting over $207,000 in general revenue during the exhibition period. The grant was utilized for signage, exhibit displays, and live collections, including a Goliath bird-eater tarantula and an emperor scorpion.
