City of Republic, MO - City Council Meeting - June 16th, 2026
Published: Jun 16, 2026
Republic Celebrates America's 250th Birthday with Proclamation
The city council issued a proclamation recognizing the United States of America's 250th birthday, celebrating the nation's history and its connection to Republic, Missouri. The proclamation was accepted by members of the local VFW Post 4593. Mayor Franklin highlighted Republic's historical significance as part of the American story, from pioneers to the railroad and Route 66, and acknowledged the sacrifices of veterans in preserving freedom. The proclamation detailed Republic's role in historical events and development.
Rezoning for Memory Care Assisted Living Facility Approved
The city council reviewed Bill 26-21 regarding a zoning classification amendment for approximately 5.25 acres at 2125 East Hamilton Street. The property is proposed to be rezoned from Oak Court Plan Development District (PDD) to Moral Assisted Living PDD, allowing for the construction of a memory care assisted living facility. The development plan includes 80 bedrooms across five buildings, with a density of approximately 15.25 dwelling units per acre. Staff recommended approval, finding the proposal consistent with the comprehensive plan, compatible with surrounding uses, and adequately served by utilities. Setbacks will match the R3 multifamily residential district. The property is currently undeveloped and owned by the applicant. City water, sewer, and storm water infrastructure are sufficient.
Republic Declares June as National Safety Month
The city council proclaimed June as National Safety Month, emphasizing community-wide safety efforts and personal responsibility, especially concerning fireworks during the Fourth of July. Doug Short accepted the proclamation on behalf of the community. Mayor Franklin highlighted the importance of safety, particularly with fireworks, and urged residents to be mindful of personal and fire safety. Doug Short added that workplace safety is crucial for ensuring employees can return home to their families.
Or Street Rail Crossing Closure Agreement Authorized
The city council considered Bill 26-20 for the first reading, authorizing an agreement with the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission and BNSF Railway Company for a rail crossing closure at Or Street. A revised, non-substantive version of the bill was approved for substitution. Karen Haynes, community development director, explained the agreement formalizes responsibilities for the at-grade crossing closure related to the MM realignment project. The closure is intended to improve safety, and the city will vacate areas within the railway right-of-way and install temporary barricades. A $200,000 cash incentive will be passed through to MoDOT for project costs. Council members discussed the impact on fire response times, with assurances that the closure would not occur until the new road and overpass are complete. The Brookline Fire District expressed opposition to the closure itself but could live with it if it occurred after the MM corridor improvements, highlighting concerns about the timing and guarantees.
