Radford Recreation Department Proposes Fee Increases for FY2027 to Fund Program Enhancements
The Radford Recreation Department is proposing rate increases for Fiscal Year 2027 to fund improvements and better equipment. Most fees will increase from approximately $30 to $45, with football and cheerleading rising to $60. These increases are justified by the inclusion of items like reversible jerseys and dry-fit materials, and participants keeping their uniforms. The department is also offering a $10 fee for participants on Medicaid and a 50% discount for coaches. The proposed changes aim to align fees with other New River Valley localities while providing enhanced benefits.

The presentation highlighted community and donor support, as well as the department's focus on quality and efficiency.
Radford City Schools Seek $93,780 Budget Increase for FY2026
The Radford City School Board presented a request to increase its Fiscal Year 2026 budget by $93,780, bringing the total to $51,218,160. This increase is attributed to additional funding and expenditures across four funds, primarily driven by changes in average daily student membership affecting state funding and the inclusion of newly awarded grants. No city funds are allocated to this increase, as it is covered by state aid and grants.
Radford Adopts Fire and EMS Recovery Fee to Bill Insurance Companies, Not Residents
Council discussed and approved Ordinance 1833, establishing a Fire and EMS Recovery Fee program. This program will charge mitigation rates for emergency and non-emergency services provided by the Fire Department and EMS to insurance carriers, not directly to residents. The goal is to recover eligible costs from insurance companies and potentially prevent future tax increases. Several municipalities in the New River Valley use a similar program with the same company, Fire Recovery USA.
