Peters Township Council - Regular Meeting - June 22, 2026
Published: Jun 22, 2026
Roadway Safety Concerns Raised Regarding Sight Distance and a Narrow Township Road
A resident expressed concerns about sight distance at the intersection of Crest View and West McMurray Road due to overgrown weeds, recommending regular cutting. It was confirmed that this is a PennDOT right-of-way, and the township periodically maintains it due to PennDOT's lack of action. Another resident discussed a small, poorly maintained township road connecting Church Hill Road to Sugar Camp Road, suggesting it be closed due to safety concerns and accidents. Council agreed to study the closure of this road.
Parks and Recreation Board Reports on Events, Infrastructure, and Safety
The Parks and Recreation Board provided an update on recent activities and upcoming events. Key highlights include successful popular events like the Mother Son Glow and Princess Ball, a large youth basketball tournament, and the certification of a recreational facilities coordinator as a playground safety inspector. Infrastructure improvements include a new scoreboard and batting cages. A grant of $20,000 was awarded for a kayak ramp, and gates were installed at the aqua park. Issues with faulty switches and a high-pressure line valve failure were addressed.
Peters Township Amends Mixed Residential Overlay Zoning
The council held a public hearing and adopted an ordinance amending zoning regulations in the mixed residential overlay district. The changes restrict right-of-way and street construction standards, reduce permitted density from six to 2.5 dwellings per acre, increase open space requirements from 10% to 30%, and eliminate multifamily housing. Three styles of detached single-family homes are now permitted. The changes were deemed consistent with the comprehensive plan.
Turkeyfoot Road Development Preliminary Plan Approved with Conditions
Council considered a preliminary subdivision plan for the Turkeyfoot Road Development, proposing 15 single-family lots on 13.24 acres. The plan includes four lots with direct access to Mullen Road and eleven on a new street off Turkeyfoot Road. The planning commission recommended approval with conditions, including the fee-in-lieu of open space instead of dedicating land, and sidewalks on both sides of the new cul-de-sac. Council debated the necessity of sidewalks and agreed to the fee-in-lieu, with notes added to the plan and deeds regarding agricultural operations and storm water easements.
Police Department to Receive New Body Armor Through Cooperative Purchasing Program
Council awarded a contract to Marco Supply Company for the purchase of heavy vest plates and carriers for police officers under the CoStars cooperative purchasing program. The purchase, costing $38,560.60, is funded by the 2026 budget appropriation of $40,000 from the equitable share fund and will replace equipment over 10 years old.
