Palmetto Bay Council Debates and Advances Ordinance to Rescind Charter Amendment Procedures
The Village Council considered an ordinance to rescind Ordinance 2026-01, which had previously amended section 2.51 of the village code regarding the village charter revision committee. The intent of the rescission was to retain the village council's right to approve any and all charter amendments. Following a recess and further discussion, including clarification from the acting village attorney regarding the Ethics Commission's opinion on potential conflicts of interest for Council Member Cody, the council voted 3-2 to approve the first reading of the ordinance to rescind Ordinance 2026-01. Subsequently, the council also voted 3-2 to approve the first reading of a resolution (RESO 2025-80) that would also rescind actions related to the Charter Revision Commission, aiming to prevent the commission from directly putting items on the ballot without council review. Both the ordinance and the resolution aim to ensure council oversight of charter amendments.
