Senior Center Praised for Profound Impact and Staff Dedication
The Town Manager highlighted positive feedback received regarding the Senior Center. A visitor complimented the staff's work with their father, who has dementia, noting the meaningful activities and impressive efforts of Estelle, Beth, Saucy, Ann, and the entire team. This feedback underscores the significant positive impact the center is having on the community.
Town Hall Designated as Primary Election Polling Location
The board is considering a change in voting locations for upcoming elections. The recommendation is to use the Town Hall at 72 East Main Street for the primary election on September 1st, 2026, with polling hours from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. This change is due to state requirements related to previous voting locations. The possibility of using this location for the general election on November 3rd is also being considered, though concerns about capacity and logistics were raised. The board also discussed gathering data on past voter turnout for primaries and general elections to better assess space needs and potential alternative locations, such as the middle school.
Town Secures $4,140 Grant for Emergency Preparedness Training
The Town Manager reported on a recent grant secured for emergency preparedness training. The grant, amounting to $4,140, was applied for by Ray Cord and will fund training initiatives to enhance the town's readiness for emergencies.
Rail Trail Ownership Delayed by Drainage, Litigation, and Material Concerns
Discussion surrounding the rail trail highlighted ongoing issues with drainage and stormwater, leading the Conservation Commission (ConCom) to hesitate in signing off on the project. There is also pending litigation concerning a portion of the trail, which MassDOT considers its liability. The town is hesitant to take ownership until these issues are resolved. Concerns were also raised about the use of gravel on a section of the trail, questioning its ADA compliance and suitability compared to packed stone dust, with a resident suggesting it may not be suitable for wheelchairs. The Land Preservation Society (LPS) reportedly requested the gravel for filtration purposes. The DPW has begun limited mowing and maintenance despite the trail not yet being town property, to ensure resident safety from ticks. A draft policy for sponsorship signage is being developed.
Overdose Awareness Vigil Planned; New Website Development Underway
The Town Manager announced that the Board of Health has been working on overdose awareness initiatives and has scheduled a vigil for August 31st in the Crane Room. Additionally, the board is appointing a new MFN commissioner, with the DPW director reappointing Diane McElligott, a professional engineer, for her continued engagement and good work. The town is also working on launching a new, more secure .gov website within the next 30 days, aiming for increased transparency and ease of access for residents.
