IT Director Dave Ped to Retire; Chief of Staff Sean Fen to Oversee IT Department
IT Director Dave Ped announced his retirement effective July 31st. Ped, who served for two years, previously worked in Belmont for several years. His tenure focused on completing significant IT projects and enhancing cybersecurity. Chief of Staff Sean Fen, with an IT background, will lead the IT department's future planning.
City Council Approves Budget with Cuts, Including Significant Reduction to IT Funding
The city council approved the budget with an 11-0 vote. This year's budget process involved six new councilors and two new department heads (Chief of Staff and Finance Director), leading to many questions and lessons learned. A post-budget retreat is scheduled for July 23rd to prepare for the FY28 budget. The approved budget included cuts, notably $85,000 to the IT budget, which may necessitate pivots due to upcoming software license renewals and the upcoming retirement of an IT staff member.
Chamber of Commerce Hosts Successful 'Longest Table' Event on State Street
The Chamber of Commerce hosted its 'Longest Table' event on State Street, featuring a collaborative meal from local restaurants for 300 attendees. The event aimed to bring the community together and support local businesses.
City Hall Time Capsule Opened; Community to Contribute to New Time Capsule
Recreation and Youth Services opened a time capsule originally placed in the city hall auditorium in 1976 by Mayor Byron Matthews. The capsule was intended to be opened 50 years later, on June 24, 2026, commemorating Newport's 125th anniversary of becoming a city. The city is also planning to create its own time capsule later in the summer.
Community Meeting Announced for Brown School Senior Housing Project Update
A community meeting is scheduled for June 30th at 6 PM at the library to provide an update on the Brown School senior housing project. The developer, Zeta Insight, is progressing with the project and has secured historic and low-income tax credits.
