Alcohol Beverage Licenses Approved for Four Establishments; One Denied

The commission addressed several alcohol beverage license applications. Joe's Joyce Pick and Scratch was recommended for denial because it was operating as a 'vice mart' instead of a food mart, as determined by code enforcement. Texaco Food Mart, Vital Latin Kitchen, Extra Mile, and A1 Stop and Shop all received approval for their alcohol beverage licenses, meeting all legal and statutory requirements, including being in good standing and meeting distance requirements where applicable.

The commission approved several contracts and purchase orders. This included authorizing the mayor to execute a professional services agreement with Meroline Pyrotechnics, LLC for a fireworks show at Lake Tobisaki for up to five years, with payment from the Lake Tobisaki fund. They also authorized the purchase of furniture for code enforcement officers from Advent Business Interiors for $148,913.49, to be paid from the 2018 SPLICE fund. Additionally, they approved the purchase of a new vehicle for the Bib County EMA using grant funds for transporting sheltering supplies and equipment.

Economic and Community Development Budgets for FY2027 Approved

The commission reviewed and approved the proposed budgets for the Economic and Community Development Department, including ESG, HOME, and CDBG funds for fiscal year 2027. Ms. Wena Jackson presented the budget details, explaining that the funds are for citizens of Bib County, focusing on housing, social services, and economic development. Specific allocations were detailed for Emergency Solutions Grant funds (for homeless individuals), HOME Investment Partnership Program funds (for affordable housing, rental, and homeownership), and Community Development Block Grant funds (for public services, infrastructure, and economic development). The process for applying for these funds through workshops was also explained.

Commission Debates Funding for Flock Cameras Amidst Public Input

The commission heard arguments for and against the use of Flock cameras, with one resident, Mr. Bailey, advocating for their approval as a necessity to combat speeding and crime, citing an incident where a kitten was killed by a speeding vehicle and the recovery of stolen property by Flock cameras in Georgia. He believes the sheriff and mayor would not support them if they violated civil rights. Conversely, Riann Wymer argued against funding the cameras, quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and questioning Sheriff Davis's understanding of the contract, suggesting he either misrepresented the camera's capabilities or lied to the commission. Wymer also pointed out that the Sheriff's Department allegedly received specific funds for Flock cameras from the Governor's Office, implying county taxpayer dollars are not needed.
