Library Announces Summer Reading Program; Code Enforcement Reports on May Activities
The library reported 11 new members and an upcoming summer reading program from July 9th to August 13th, focusing on art, crafts, STEM, and contests, with registration beginning January 30th and priority sales on June 13th. A separate report from code enforcement for May indicated 229 seals, 54 violations found, 100 violations written, 48 abatements, and 8 tickets written. There were 538 yearly rental inspections and 1 yearly rental reinspection. Zero vehicle moves, illegal dumpsters, or businesses operating without permits/approvals were noted. Residents Raise Concerns Over Overgrown Trees and Persistent Trash/Nuisance Issues
A resident from Clinton reported concerns about large trees on Emerald's property encroaching onto their property, causing damage to their roof. Another resident, Stephen Miller, reported a long-standing problem with trash cans and trash accumulation in an alleyway, which he has personally cleaned multiple times. He noted that water and sewage are now going into neighbors' properties due to concrete work without permits. Multiple complaints have been made over a year with no resolution. There are also issues with roosters, dogs, and a bonfire in a backyard where chemicals were present, and trash was burned.
School Graduation, New Cell Phone Policy, and Historical Events Announced
Updates were provided on school events and new state mandates. Lyndon Walls High School graduation is on June 18th. A statewide mandate requires K-12 public schools to enact bell-to-bell cell phone policies starting the 2026-2027 school year, prohibiting student phone use during the entire school day except for documented medical or IEP reasons. The state is offering grants to assist districts with storage solutions. Public Works and Police Department Release Monthly Statistics
Public Works reported on collected trash and recycling, resident assistance, scrap metal, concrete, and stumps. They also noted zero property maintenance, accidents, and injuries, but had 58 service calls, 10 stoppages, and 10 emergency calls, with specific figures for pump station repairs and trouble areas. For the police department, there were 1,866 total calls for service, 44 traffic accidents, 49 community policing events, 255 traffic stops, and various criminal and traffic complaints/summons issued. Detective investigations totaled 37.
