Mayor Praises Firefighters' Response to Cumberland Street Fire; Drone Technology Aided Efforts
The mayor commended the efforts of firefighters and mutual aid companies in combating a recent fire on Cumberland Street. The fire, which occurred at a complex location, required significant manpower due to its complexity. The mayor highlighted the critical assistance provided by the Lebanon County Department of Emergency Services, particularly their drone with thermal imaging capabilities, which aided in identifying hotspots. This is the second fire on Cumberland Street within approximately six months. The city expressed sorrow for those who lost residences and businesses and pledged support to help them recover.
Special Council Meeting to Rededicate Declaration of Independence Scheduled
A special council meeting is scheduled for July 2nd at 4:45 PM to consider a resolution to rededicate the Declaration of Independence. This event is part of the city's 250th-anniversary celebration and will involve reading the Declaration of Independence aloud, with council members potentially taking turns. The purpose is to reaffirm support for the principles outlined in the Declaration, similar to instructions from the city's bicentennial committee for a time capsule. The historical society will also be present to discuss the Declaration's significance and its historical dissemination in Lebanon. The meeting will be publicly advertised, and it is considered an important and honorable event.
City to Accept Land Dedication for Canton Street Widening
The council considered accepting a deed of dedication from David Drummond for approximately 0.029 acres of land. This land will be used to widen the public right-of-way for Canton Street. Drummond, who owns a single-family dwelling with a carriage house, is subdividing the carriage house and converting it into a second single-family dwelling. To meet street frontage requirements, he is donating three feet of his land to widen Canton Street, where he has already completed the cartway widening improvements. The city will accept the dedication to update its records. This situation was compared to a previous instance involving Aaron Camaro at 9th and Maple Streets.
City Council Reviews Positive Mid-Year Budget Report
The council reviewed the budget report for the period of January 1st through May 31st. Approximately 42% of the budget year is complete, with revenues at nearly 56% and expenditures just under 30%. The city is performing better than budgeted in both categories, with a combination of larger upcoming bills like pension payments and efforts to spend less than budgeted contributing to this positive financial standing.
