Hempfield Area Recreation Commission Highlights Growth, Capital Improvements, and Future Expansion Plans
Jeff Book, from the Hempfield Area Recreation Commission, presented an update on the commission's activities and future plans. He highlighted the growth in their programs, including day camps for 300 kids and participation of over 400 kids in various parks. The commission maintains nine parks, manages before and after-school care for about 270 kids at six different sites, and operates the East Petersburg pool. Significant capital improvements totaling over $3 million have been made since 2021, including climate-controlling six indoor tennis courts, making it the only such facility in the local region with heat and air conditioning. The commission is planning for future expansion, having completed a feasibility study and master plan. They are also undertaking a parking lot master site plan due to current parking shortages, especially at night. The commission has a 25-year lease for $1 per year from East Enfield Township for the land and building, which was renewed last year, providing long-term security for planned investments. They are exploring fundraising options and are financially healthy, having recently become debt-free. The commission serves approximately 6,500 members and sees over 100,000 people utilize their facilities annually through programs and events.
Resident Reports Dangerous Exit Ramp Use and Solicitation ID Issues
During public comment, a resident reported an incident where a vehicle used an exit ramp on Centerville Road heading towards the 30 bridge as an entrance. The resident noted this was a topic of discussion when McDonald's was being considered for the location, with assurances it would not happen, but an accident was narrowly avoided. The resident suggested a divider might be necessary. Separately, concerns were raised about door-to-door salespersons not having proper township identification, with one instance where a manager reportedly held the only ID card. The police department confirmed that all individuals must have an ID, and a solicitation ordinance requires a $100 permit and registration with the police department for each individual.
