Huntsville ISD Approves Updated Compensation Plan and Hiring Schedule
Huntsville ISD presented an updated compensation plan and hiring schedule for the 2026-2027 school year, emphasizing competitiveness and substantial advancements in pay. Key initiatives include increasing the starting salary to $56,000, making it one of the highest in the area, and providing a $1,750 raise for instructional assistants. The district also implemented a 5% raise for employees and increased its contribution to $450. Adjustments were made to career pathways and substitute paraprofessional raises by $10. A distinction was made between pay scales for certified and non-certified teachers, with incentives for non-certified staff to obtain certification, supported by ongoing education funds. New positions and initiatives were highlighted, including executive director roles for teaching and learning, a coordinator for testing and mentorship, and a coordinator for facilities. The compensation plan aims to retain and recruit the best employees by aligning pay structures with market standards, addressing compression, and recognizing long-term employees.
Huntsville ISD Adopts Blue Bonnet Learning Curriculum for Consistent Instruction
Huntsville ISD is implementing the Blue Bonnet Learning curriculum, a state-developed program aligned with Texas standards, beginning in August 2026. This initiative aims to address disappointing accountability scores by providing a more consistent and complete set of instructional materials for teachers, moving away from disparate sources. The goal is to ensure all students receive a high-quality education with a shared language and consistent lesson plans across campuses. Teachers have expressed both anticipation and some apprehension about the shift, acknowledging it will be a significant change. The district has established a guiding coalition for Blue Bonnet learning, provided optional after-school trainings, and is utilizing funds from the state's Lyft grant for professional learning, instructional coaching, and leadership development to support the implementation.
Huntsville ISD Reviews ESSA Grant Application and Spending
Huntsville ISD presented its annual ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) application and spending review to the board. The district is applying for federal grant funds to support student achievement, teacher development, English language acquisition, and student support services. The application process involves stakeholder engagement and aims to supplement, not replace, state and local funding. The presentation detailed the various titles under ESSA (Title I, Title I Part D, Title II Part A, Title III, Title IV, Title V) and their intended uses, including after-school tutoring, professional learning, technology innovation, fine arts, PE equipment, English learner services, and family engagement. The district highlighted its comprehensive needs assessment, guided by student performance data, improvement plans, and stakeholder feedback, to make funding decisions. The board was informed that public comment would be accepted until July 1st, with the application deadline set for July 1st.
Huntsville ISD Seeks Renewal for Hornet Success Academy's Flexible School Day Program
Huntsville ISD is renewing its Optional Flexible School Day Program for the Hornet Success Academy (HSA) for the 2026-2027 school year. The program allows students with unusual barriers to success to earn a diploma through a flexible pathway, individualized pacing, and support. HSA has graduated 402 students between 2019 and 2026, with 85% graduating within the first year. All full-time HSA students have earned college, career, or military readiness points for the last three years. The program offers a four-hour school day, flexible attendance, personalized pacing, and a student-centered approach. It emphasizes postsecondary goals, provides academic mentoring, and partners with entities like Sam Houston State University and local businesses to prepare students for success. Community partnerships with Walker County Workforce Solutions and local businesses have been instrumental. The program requires students to meet specific indicators and apply to demonstrate need, with eligibility determined by an admissions committee. Approval of the application is required prior to submission to TEA.
