Resident Accuses Council of Disregard, Threatens IRS Complaint Over Alleged Oath Violation and Financial Gain

Derek Strom stated that Minnesota Power passing green energy costs onto consumers and CEOs like Larry Fink of BlackRock indicating communities, not companies, pay for data centers, suggests the council doesn't care about residents. He claimed to have information from state law office friends about council members violating their oath of office, specifically citing Mayor Boucher for lying. He is gathering evidence for further complaints. He questioned why the council proceeds with a project the community opposes and suggested potential financial gain or quid pro quo. He has filed a complaint with the IRS for investigation into financial gain.

Resident Questions Pace of Development, Cites Strain on Services and Loss of Community Character

Susan Anderson expressed concerns about the city's rapid development, questioning 'When is enough enough?' She noted that since moving in 1992, Hermantown has experienced increased development, leading to more housing, a new school (with another likely needed), more streets, increased need for snow plowing, police, and fire services. She feels the city is losing its character and that the development direction is not aligned with her desires for a simpler existence and enjoyment of life's simple things. She stated she does not feel represented by the current direction.

Scientist Urges Caution on AI Development, Cites Unpredictability and Potential Harms of Data Centers

Susan Ralph, a scientist experienced in new technologies, expressed concerns about the unpredictability of AI, noting that even creators don't fully understand its workings and unexpected capabilities or consequences can arise. She cautioned against the unchecked growth and indiscriminate adoption of AI, suggesting it's not inevitable and urging the city to slow down and gain understanding before investing further. She believes denying the data center development is a step towards this goal. She also noted the potential harms related to noise, energy consumption, water usage, and resource demands, and mentioned that many data centers slated for completion in 2027 have not started construction, with others delayed.
