The City Council discussed and approved the fiscal year 2027 budget, which includes a property tax rate of 1.7471 per $100 of assessed value, a 4-penny increase. This budget was achieved after cutting $1.3 million in expenditures, including unfunding two vacant positions and reducing professional development budgets. The budget balances at $33.4 million in revenue and $33.3 million in expenditures, resulting in a small operating surplus. The council also debated options for balancing the budget, including a 3-penny increase or drawing from reserves, ultimately choosing the 4-penny increase. The George Clint steering committee is working on a long-term proposal for the facility's use and is aware of and reportedly has no negative feedback regarding Head Start's presence. The council also approved an addendum to this agreement, allowing Head Start to install security measures (cameras) at the main entrance and hallway, funded by Head Start, with the condition that the town can access footage if needed.
