Senior Advisory Commission Reports on Recent Activities

Gastonia Honors 2025 Employees of the Year
The City of Gastonia recognized its 2025 Employees of the Year across several categories. Dave Anglin received the Customer Service Award for his nearly three decades of service as a fire engineer. Michael Branson was honored with the Extraordinary Service Award for his over 15 years as an engineering technician. April Cohut, Applications Manager, received the Leadership Award for her integrity and support of her team. Captain Craig Lawrence of the Police Department was awarded the Safety Award for his work in officer safety training. Clayton Smith, Employment Manager, received the Stronger Together Award for his collaborative approach.
Gastonia NAACP President Urges Council to Address Community Issues
Sean Bates, President of the Gastonia NAACP branch, addressed the city council, urging them to speak up more publicly on community issues beyond recognizing positive achievements. He highlighted concerns about school funding and a monument outside the council chambers, emphasizing that while these might not be direct council responsibilities, the citizens are. Bates criticized the allocation of $400,000 to an individual described as promoting blackface films, arguing that these funds could better serve the houseless community and struggling students. He called for greater accountability and for elected officials to openly express their beliefs and principles.
Gastonia Introduces 2026 Summer Intern Cohort
The City of Gastonia introduced its 2026 summer intern cohort. The interns, hailing from various UNC system universities and Belmont Abbey, will be working on projects across multiple city departments, including Sister Cities, 2 Rivers Utilities, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Engineering, Water Department, Shield Museum, Economic Development, Finance, Wastewater Treatment Plant, and Grants Management. The program is funded by the city, and the interns will present their project outcomes in July and August.
Gastonia Council Approves Deferred Compensation Plan, Personnel Policy Amendments, and Section 125 Update
The Personnel Committee recommended approval of three actionable items. First, a resolution authorizing the adoption of the North Carolina Public Employee Deferred Compensation Plan. Second, amendments to the Personnel Policy Manual, clarifying existing practices. A question was raised about health and life insurance for new hires after July 1, 2026, which was clarified to apply to retirement benefits, not active employee benefits. Third, an update to the Section 125 plan, adopting an amended and restated flexible benefits plan and summary plan description. All three items were approved unanimously by the council.
