Published: Jun 23, 2026
Resident Alleges Extraordinary Gas Prices, Seeks Township Investigation
During public comment, a resident raised concerns about extraordinary gasoline pricing practices at the Exxon station located at 1101 Eastern Avenue. The resident provided specific price comparisons showing significantly higher prices for premium and plus fuel compared to nearby competitors, exceeding even California's statewide average. The resident requested the township investigate these pricing disparities, consider submitting a formal complaint to the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, and forward concerns to the Better Business Bureau.
Residents Voice Traffic Concerns; Amwell Road Rumble Strips and JFK Boulevard Traffic Light Under Review
During public discussion, residents raised concerns about traffic safety and infrastructure. One resident inquired about potential restrictions on pool rentals, which was deferred to an admin/land use meeting. Another resident asked about the possibility of installing a rumble strip on Amwell Road and conducting a traffic light study for JFK Boulevard. The township manager responded that Amwell Road is a county road, so the township has no authority but will raise the request with Somerset County Engineering. Regarding JFK Boulevard and Winston Drive, a traffic study is underway by the township engineering office to determine if a traffic signal is warranted, a process expected to take several months.
Community Engagement, Safety, and Educational Initiatives Highlighted at Council Meeting
The council meeting featured numerous community-focused discussions and updates. Council members highlighted participation in various community events like the Franklin Pride celebration, Juneteenth parade, and Turkish community event, emphasizing the town's inclusiveness. Plans for Independence Day fireworks on July 2nd were announced. Councilwoman Shipin discussed initiatives with the county board of health and a potential sidewalk project, as well as a STEM program and teacher upskilling initiative with NJIT and the board of education. Councilman Embarrison reported on an e-bike safety update and a food bank poetry contest, and announced a FIFA final game screening event at Franklin High School. Councilwoman Francois highlighted the positive impact of the youth center and discussed the admin committee's vetting of a gas leaf blower recommendation, suggesting waiting for state legislation. Councilman Vasinella acknowledged recent fires, praised volunteer firefighters, and mentioned the renewal of a contract for fire districts. He also noted discussions regarding e-bike laws and a cannabis ordinance. Councilman Wright highlighted the 'Road to Success' program at the middle and high school, emphasizing perseverance. Deputy Mayor Kurazzi acknowledged blood drive participants, congratulated high school graduates, and shared an educational experience at the food bank with elementary students. The mayor provided historical context for July 4th celebrations and announced upcoming Franklin 250 events, including fireworks and a reading of the Declaration of Independence. The manager detailed upcoming events: a tradesman program for 13-18 year olds and a Franklin 250 night at Somerset Ballpark with Revolutionary War themes and fireworks.
Township Council Considers Open Space Acquisitions and Cannabis Ordinance Amendments
The council is considering ordinances to acquire and preserve land for open space. Ordinance 4511-26 aims to acquire land through purchase or condemnation for open space preservation, specifically mentioning the Collins Property (Block 5.02, Lot 70Q) located on State Route 27, Princeton, New Jersey. Ordinance 4512-26 appropriates $426,721.40 from the Open Space Trust Fund for this acquisition. Additionally, Ordinance 4513-26 proposes acquiring land at 287 Cedar Grove Lane, Somerset, New Jersey, for open space preservation, with a purchase price of $5.2 million (budgeted up to $5.46 million). This property is approximately 34 acres and could have accommodated about 25 homes. A further ordinance, 4515-26, will amend the municipal code regarding cannabis, rescinding the current chapter and replacing it with new regulations including licensing fees of $10,000 for retail and $20,000 for cultivators, and establishing regulations for commercial establishments. The council also discussed potential policies for simultaneous notification of all council members regarding urgent needs and the process for board appointments.
