Resident Questions High Gas Prices; Township Cites Lack of State Regulation

During the meeting, a resident, Chiway Troy, raised concerns about extraordinarily high gasoline prices at a specific Exxon station located at 1101 Easton Avenue. Troy noted that regular gasoline was frequently 10-20% higher than nearby competitors and that premium plus fuel was priced significantly higher, even exceeding California's statewide average. Troy requested the township investigate these pricing practices for potential consumer protection issues and consider submitting a complaint to the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs and the Better Business Bureau. Township Manager Reno explained that gasoline pricing itself is not regulated by the state of New Jersey, except during declared emergencies for price gouging. He advised consumers to avoid purchasing gas at stations with excessively high prices and noted that the particular station's location historically allowed for higher pricing due to its proximity to Route 287. The Admin committee also vetted a recommendation from the Environmental Commission regarding gas leaf blowers, deciding to wait for state legislation before taking township action.
