Residents Raise Concerns on Animal Control, Garbage Collection, Noise, and Fishing Regulations
During the public comments section, a resident raised concerns about the city's animal control ordinance (016-15) following an incident where pit bulls attacked a cat. The resident requested a review of the ordinance, specifically questioning the policy of returning dogs deemed potentially vicious to owners and advocating for stricter regulations to prevent future attacks. Another resident voiced concerns about the persistent garbage issues in the Northwest section and Lincoln Park area, particularly in subsidized housing areas, noting the unsanitary conditions and lack of response from code enforcement. Additional public comments included issues regarding fishing restrictions at Melody Lane pier and downtown park, and resident complaints about noise violations, particularly in District 1, with a call to strengthen the noise ordinance.
Fort Pierce Proclaims July 4, 2026, as America's 250th Independence Anniversary
The City Commission issued a proclamation recognizing July 4, 2026, as America's 250th Independence Anniversary in the City of Fort Pierce. The proclamation acknowledges the foundational principles of liberty, democracy, and justice upon which the nation was built and emphasizes the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on the nation's journey, celebrate achievements, and envision its future. It also reaffirms the city's commitment to fostering an environment of mutual respect, understanding, and the continuation of freedoms enshrined in the Constitution. The proclamation was received by Linda Gallup, honorary regent of the Cora Stickney Harper Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution.
City Approves $2.7 Million Financing for Six New Garbage Trucks
The City Commission approved Resolution 26-R38, accepting the proposal of Regions Capital Advantage Inc. to purchase the city's not to exceed $2.7 million Solid Waste Facilities Revenue Note Series 2026. The proceeds will finance the purchase of six refuse trucks for the solid waste department. This is a five-year loan with a 3.85% interest rate, which is lower than the initially proposed lease program rate of 4.95%. The financing is from an enterprise fund, not the general fund. Commissioners discussed concerns regarding the age of the current fleet (average 12 years), the need for new trucks to address service issues, potential staffing shortages for operating the new trucks, and the rising cost of landfill tipping fees.
City Approves Annexation and Rezoning for 10.53 Acres for Industrial Development
The City Commission held a public hearing and quasi-judicial hearing for Ordinance 26-011, Ordinance 26-012, and Ordinance 26-013 concerning the voluntary annexation and rezoning of two parcels totaling approximately 10.53 acres. The land, located near Selvets Road and Glades Cutoff Road, was annexed into the city and its future land use designation was changed from county industrial to city heavy industrial, with the zoning changed from county heavy industrial (IH) to city heavy industrial (I-3). This change is intended to facilitate the development of an asphalt production facility and aligns with the established industrial character of the area. Staff recommended approval for all ordinances, and the Planning Board also recommended approval for the annexation and land use amendment.
