Parks and Recreation Department Praised for Tournament Support and Facility Upgrades
The Parks and Recreation Department has been working diligently on June's baseball and softball tournaments, requiring crews to work seven days a week. Visitors have praised the city's facilities. The pickleball courts at Southside and the main city park are nearing completion, with surfacing underway and expected to be finished within a week, in time for the senior games. The department's efforts are highly appreciated.
City to Rebid Airport Sidewalk Rehabilitation Project
The city council is considering authorizing staff to rebid the FAA Airport Improvement Project (AIP 64) for the rehabilitation of terminal sidewalks. The project involves removing and reconstructing approximately 1,150 square yards of sidewalk, including curb and gutter, and replacing drainage structures. This follows a previous meeting where bids were not accepted. Staff aims to rebid in the fall or winter, with hopes for additional FAA funding. The city was able to retain approximately $416,000 in FAA funding that was initially at risk.
New City Boom Truck Available for Viewing
The city council was presented with a new boom truck purchased with last year's budget. It is now available for viewing after the meeting. The truck was driven out, and it was noted that the basket was not purchased with it.
City to Retain Girl Scout House for Public and Recreational Use
The council discussed the future use of the Girl Scout House, which the city recently reacquired. Four options were presented: 1) City retains ownership for Parks and Recreation and public use; 2) Convey to a 501c3 with a reversionary clause; 3) Sell at auction; 4) Enter into an exclusive lease. Staff recommended Option 1, utilizing the house for recreation programs and allowing other community organizations, including the Girl Scouts and Elks Lodge, to use the space. The council voted 4-1 to approve Option 1, with a review period of three to five years. This decision allows the city to leverage the property for community benefit while managing maintenance and utility costs.
City Council Reviews Insurance Pool Renewal, Anticipates Cost Decrease
The city is considering a renewal proposal for the Nevada Public Agency Insurance Pool for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. The total program cost is $977,602.82, which represents a 4.56% decrease from the current year. Representatives from LP Insurance and Pool Pact presented the renewal, highlighting the power of the pool in achieving lower costs and maintaining deductibles despite a challenging insurance market. They also emphasized the pool's additional services like risk services, training, and HR support. The decrease in cost is attributed to savings in reinsurance, with a significant reduction achieved by increasing coverage limits. The city's participation in the pool provides equity and financial strength.
