Published: Jun 8, 2026
Suicide Prevention Walk Planned for August 22nd
The town is considering a proposal for a suicide prevention walk and subsequent event on August 22nd. The event organizers, Carrie Kingman and Tony Patado, discussed their goals of raising awareness and building a community for those struggling with mental health issues. The police chief confirmed that all necessary arrangements are in place, and the event is expected to be officially approved at a future meeting.
Permit Fees Waived for Central Elementary School Project
The town voted to waive permit fees for the Central Elementary School project. This waiver prevents residents from paying interest on funds that would simply be moving between town accounts, as the fees would be reimbursed. This practice was previously followed for the high school project.
Federal Douglas Rail Trail Proposal Presented to Select Board
Diane Phillips and Matt Dyer presented a proposal for the Federal Douglas Rail Trail, a shared-use pathway connecting Whitman, East Bridgewater, and Bridgewater. The proposed route in East Bridgewater would utilize a former rail line and pass through town-owned land, private properties, and tax-title properties. The project is conceptual, emphasizing community support and not involving eminent domain. Next steps involve obtaining easements, conducting feasibility studies, and developing engineering plans. The town council will be looped in on next steps regarding contacting property owners. Discussions also touched on potential property value impacts and the need for a standard easement form.
Appointments and Contract Discussions Held
The Select Board appointed Catherine as the alternate representative to the Plymouth County Advisory Board. The board also approved the town accountant to act on behalf of the town for the septic loan program and discussed the fiscal year 2026 contract with East Bridgewater Superior Offices.
Resident Proposes Speed Bumps for Union Street Amidst Traffic Concerns
Richard Sakorski raised concerns about excessive traffic speed and volume on Union Street. He reported observing 297 vehicles, including large trucks, traveling at high speeds during a two-hour period. Sakorski proposed the installation of four portable speed bumps as a traffic calming measure, citing their removability in winter and relatively low cost. The proposal has been submitted to the traffic board, and the matter will be reviewed by the Traffic Advisory Committee.
