Board Reviews Policies on Educator Misconduct, Athletics, Threat Assessment, and NIL for Student-Athletes

The board reviewed and discussed several policy updates, including those related to educator misconduct, conduct and discipline, threat assessment, and interscholastic athletics. Policy 123, concerning interscholastic athletics, was noted to include language for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) for student-athletes, aligning with PIAA guidance. The policy requires students to notify the district in writing before engaging in commercial endorsements or promotional activities. Other policies discussed included educator misconduct, conduct/discipline, and threat assessment.

New Law Mandates AEDs at School Sporting Events; Potential Cell Phone Ban Discussed

A new law, Senate Bill 375 (Act 17 of 2026), now requires automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to be present at all PIAA-sanctioned athletic events and practices to prevent sudden cardiac arrest. Schools must develop and rehearse emergency action plans for cardiac arrest incidents. The district is reviewing its current AED inventory and training protocols to ensure compliance. The law was introduced following the death of Greg Moyer. Additionally, a House Bill 1814, which would require school districts to adopt bell-to-bell cell phone usage policies, has passed the House and is awaiting further action, intended to reduce classroom distractions. The PA House Legislative Fellowship Program is accepting applications for college students.
