City Approves Specific Use Permit for New Birth Glory Center Church Relocation
The City Council approved a specific use permit for the New Birth Glory Center Church to operate at 1033 Dixie Drive, Suite A. The church is relocating from its current adjacent location to a new space to accommodate the expansion of bingo operations. The permit was granted with standard stipulations, and the ordinance was passed unanimously by the council following a joint public hearing with the Planning and Zoning Commission. The property is located in the BCICE division 15, with a legal description including specific lot and survey information. The council also approved the ordinance formally permitting this use.
Andrew Gordon Appointed to Great Texas Mosquito Festival SWAT Team Executive Board
The City Council appointed Andrew Gordon to fill a vacant position on the SWAT team executive board of the Great Texas Mosquito Festival. Gordon, the new director of development at the center, resides in Lake Jackson, which is permissible as residency in Clute is not required for this board. The position became vacant when the previous member moved for employment. The appointment was recommended unanimously by the rest of the board. The council also approved Resolution 33-2026 for this appointment.
Woodshore Residents Raise Concerns Over Speeding, Request Traffic Calming Measures
Woodshore residents, represented by HOA President Aldo Capristo, expressed significant concerns regarding speeding within their subdivision. Residents noted issues with long, straight roads, varied speed limits (20, 25, 30 mph), and vehicles cutting through the neighborhood. Potential solutions discussed included speed bumps, increased police patrols, additional stop signs at specific intersections (Woodridge and Canvas Back; Meadow Ridge Way and Canvas Back; Bentwood Lane and Bentwood Way), and 'Children at Play' signs. The current speed limit of 20 mph in some areas was highlighted as potentially illegal, with staff confirming the lowest legal speed limit is 25 mph, and a review is underway to standardize to 25 mph. Data presented by the Police Chief indicated that two-thirds of traffic stops in Woodshore were of residents, suggesting a need for internal community policing. The design of a specific traffic circle at Prairie Grass and Watergrass was also criticized for being confusing and potentially dangerous, with suggestions for improved signage or removal. The city is reviewing traffic signage and will convene the Traffic Commission to discuss potential next steps.
