City and County Councils Form Working Group to Expedite Jail Site Selection

The City Council and County Council convened for a joint meeting to discuss the county's jail construction project, focusing on site selection and the associated processes. Key discussions revolved around identifying viable locations, understanding zoning regulations within city limits, and establishing a collaborative working group to move forward. The city planning department outlined the expedited process for site plan approval, noting that a change in zoning or PUD amendment, particularly concerning size and scope, would necessitate City Council approval. A motion was passed to form a working group comprising representatives from both city and county councils, the mayor's office, the county executive's office, the sheriff's office, judges, the prosecutor's office, and the public defender's office. This group is tasked with evaluating two to three potential locations and presenting findings within one month. All meetings of this working group will be public.
