Public Hearing Opens on Water and Sewer Standby Fee Collection for FY 2026-2027
The council opened a public hearing to adopt Resolution APUA 2602, which allows for the collection of water and sewer standby fees by the county tax collector alongside general taxes for fiscal year 2026-2027. These fees apply to vacant properties and are intended to fund future expansion of sewer and water systems upon development. Amounts generally range from $20 to $50 per acre for sewer and water charges, based on property acreage and proximity to existing services.
City Enhances Public Safety Measures Amidst Rise in Vandalism and Theft
The city is addressing an increase in theft, vandalism, and illegal dumping. Incidents include the theft and recovery of public works vehicles, vandalism to vehicles at City Hall and solar-powered facilities, and damage to playground equipment at Marconi Park due to arson. In response, staff is identifying strategic locations for surveillance camera installation to deter criminal activity and improve public safety. Additionally, a contractor is being selected to replace the damaged playground equipment, with costs covered by insurance.
Council Agrees to Consider Flying Juneteenth Flag
Councilwoman Evans requested that moving forward, the city purchase and raise a flag for Juneteenth, citing that multiple cities did this and it was an amazing thing to see. The council approved this request for future agenda consideration.
Marconi Park Enhancements Include New Artificial Turf and Playground Replacement
Construction of a new artificial turf installation for the football field at Marconi Park is progressing on schedule. Despite the recent fire that destroyed a playground structure, the park is undergoing major improvements. Once the playground is replaced and the turf project is completed, Marconi Park is expected to offer an enhanced recreational experience for the community's youth and families.
