Yorba Linda Enhances Firefighting Capabilities with Heli-Hydrants and Backup Generators

Brett Barberie, serving on the water board, discussed the city's heli-hydrant technology, developed after the 2008 Freeway Complex Fire. These radio-controlled tanks provide unlimited gravity-fed water for firefighting helicopters and have been used successfully to combat fires before they escalate, including the SAPHIRE Fire in Chino Hills and a fire in Carbon Canyon. The city has three heli-hydrants, with two further equipped with landing zones and refueling capabilities. Barberie also explained the implementation of natural gas backup generators at booster pump stations to ensure water supply during power outages, a critical measure for this hilly community.

OCFA Briefs Yorba Linda on Elevated Wildfire Risk and Preparedness Measures

The Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Mike Morgenstern provided an update on wildfire preparedness for the 2026 wildfire season. He noted the lack of rain has led to critical fuel moisture status, with dry grasses ready to burn and heavier vegetation curing rapidly, indicating potential for sustained, hotter burns with faster spread rates. Several fires are currently active across the state and region. Projections indicate a high potential for large fire growth, exacerbated by moderate winds, negating the need for strong Santa Ana winds to drive fires. OCFA is operationally ready with all personnel and equipment prepared. They are conducting evacuation drills with law enforcement, have state resource guarantees, and will implement 24-hour dozer operations starting July 1st. The county utilizes 24 wildland cameras, six water points (three in Yorba Linda with heli-hydrants), and a drone program for advanced monitoring and mop-up procedures. Residents are urged to visit the OCFA website (ocfa.org) for preparedness tips and educational materials.

Yorba Linda E-bike Safety Program Update: Education Reaches Thousands, Enforcement Actions Detailed

The City Council received an update on the city's e-bike safety program, detailing education, outreach, and enforcement efforts. Over 2,500 middle school students and 23,000 parents have been educated, and enforcement actions have resulted in over 300 warnings and 51 citations. Challenges remain, particularly with juveniles evading pursuit and the technical capabilities of e-bikes. Trauma data indicates a significant rise in pediatric injuries related to e-bikes. Council members requested enhanced targeted enforcement on trails and exploration of additional resources. The city plans to provide a one-year progress update in December.
