Burden Avenue Speed Limit Reduced to 35 MPH Following Council Vote
The Town Council discussed and adopted an ordinance to reduce the speed limit on Burden Avenue from 45 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour. This decision followed public comment supporting the reduction, citing safety concerns for residents in nearby apartment complexes and townhouses, as well as proximity to the Van Riper Hopper House and a new municipal playground. The ordinance passed with a unanimous vote.
New Ordinance Requires Minimum of Four Parking Spaces for Restaurants and Cafes
The council considered an ordinance to amend Chapter 134, Land Development, of the township code, specifically addressing parking requirements for restaurants or cafes. The proposed amendment mandates a minimum of four parking spaces for such establishments. This ordinance is intended to mitigate chaotic parking situations, particularly for takeout restaurants lacking adequate parking, which have involved police intervention. Existing businesses would need to comply, potentially requiring variances.
Lifeguards Raise Safety Concerns Over Pool Staffing and Policy Changes, Threaten Walkout
Lifeguards from the James W. Rowe Memorial Pool expressed significant concerns regarding recent changes to staffing, break policies, and operational procedures, which they deem unsafe for both themselves and patrons. They argue that reduced staffing, inadequate break times (only 10 minutes for long shifts), and the relocation of break areas compromise their ability to respond effectively to emergencies, maintain alertness in extreme heat, and ensure patron safety. They also report being discouraged from communication and facing threats of termination for speaking out. A former manager, Molly McGuire, was highlighted for her supportive leadership and is alleged to have been unjustly fired for advocating for staff.
New Wayne Pantry Garden Launched to Provide Fresh Produce for Local Families
The Council discussed the new Wayne Pantry Garden, a collaborative project behind the Wayne Community Center. This initiative involves the Mayor, Passaic County Association of Master Gardeners, and the Public Works Department. The garden features raised beds with an irrigation system and is expected to yield an abundance of fresh produce for the Wayne Pantry, aiming to provide 2,000 pounds of food for approximately 300 local families. The project received grant funding from the Passaic County Commissioners and is in conjunction with City Green.
Local Girl Scout Honored with Gold Award for Community Food Awareness Project
The Town Council recognized Justina Mango for earning the Girl Scout Gold Award. Her project focused on spreading food awareness within the community by creating a sensory garden and conducting meetings about food options. The award signifies the highest achievement in Girl Scouts and commends her leadership and service.
