Gas Main Rupture on Quail Ridge Leads to Home Evacuations
A directional boring contractor installing fiber optic cable struck a gas main on Quail Ridge on Friday evening, leading to the evacuation of approximately 45 homes. The situation was managed effectively by public works, fire, police, and EMS departments, with the main repaired without further incidents. An ongoing investigation is being conducted, and further information will be released later. Director of Public Works JR commended the involved departments and named several individuals for their dedication and professionalism.
Council Approves Fee Waivers, Digger Truck Purchase, and Turbine Generator Project Changes
The council approved several fee waiver requests and the purchase of new equipment. A $130 fee waiver for bridge restoration repair construction at the Peterstown House for the Peterstown Heritage Society was approved. A $217.20 fee waiver for pavilion construction at the Northern Communities of Flash Pack for the Order of Heart District was also approved. The purchase of a new digger garrett truck from T-REX USA for $476,299 for the city's electric line department was approved. Additionally, contract change order number two with Lima Construction Company, Inc. for $42,673.07 for the combustible turbine generator project was approved, along with change orders number three and four totaling $40,622.38 and $7,435.45 respectively, also for the combustible turbine generator project, which are to be reimbursed by the state.
Student Commended for Solar Panel Engineering Project
A certificate of commendation was presented to an unnamed student for achieving second place in project engineering at the 2026 exposition of the Illinois Junior Academy. The student presented their project, which focused on determining the most effective origami design for solar panels. They researched various folds, including the Miora Ori (previously used by NASA), the accordion fold, and the flasher fold. The Miora Ori design performed best in energy generation and was the most efficient in terms of folded size.
Council Approves New Inspector and Library Board Appointment
The council approved the appointment of Gary Birkenmeyer as a fifth inspector and the appointment of Senate Linkerd to the Library Board for the remainder of Ken Perkins' term, expiring June 30, 2027. This was done through standard council procedures and roll call votes.
