Struthers Council Discusses Opportunity Zone Nominations Amidst Business Owner's Concerns

A letter from Mike Hassam, founder of Morgan Oil, expressing frustration with the mayor's perceived lack of leadership regarding the city's economic future and warning of an impending deadline for opportunity zones. Hassam stated that he was unaware of the benefits and that the mayor had initially denied the existence of opportunity zones in Struthers. He urged the council to bypass the mayor and coordinate directly with the Western Reserve Port Authority to ensure Struthers' census tracts are nominated before the July 10th deadline, to avoid losing millions in private equity and state tax incentives until 2037. Council members responded, clarifying that the mayor had become aware of the zones and was in communication with the Port Authority, and that an email had been sent to council on June 19th regarding re-nominations. There was discussion about educating the council and administration further on the matter.
