Planning Commission Approves New Drive-Thru Coffee Shop Amid Resident Concerns
The Planning Commission reviewed and approved a special conditional use permit for "Seven Brew," a drive-thru only coffee establishment, at 15748 Fort Street. The approval was contingent on confirmation from MDOT, including a traffic study permit, to ensure the project does not affect resident safety and welfare. Residents had raised concerns regarding increased traffic congestion and safety risks for pedestrians and nearby residents. The developer was noted as understanding and responsive to these concerns.
City Addresses Priority Waste Service Issues, Imposes Penalties
The city is addressing ongoing issues with Priority Waste regarding missed trash and compost routes. The contract allows for $1,000 penalties for each missed route, which the city has been charging against monthly invoices. The city is planning a meeting with Priority Waste's CEO to discuss continuous issues and aims for timely and predictable trash service. The recent holiday weekend saw significant delays, exacerbated by numerous garage sales and issues with compost pickup, which was delayed until Sunday.
City Considers Revising Ordinance on E-bikes Following State Law Update
The Police Chief provided an update on the current ordinance regarding low-speed vehicles, which prohibits ebikes and electric scooters within the city. He noted that state law allows ebikes on roadways and suggested that the city ordinance may need to be amended to reflect this. The issue has become more prevalent with warmer weather, and the police department is reviewing the ordinance in consultation with the city attorney.
Planning Commission Approves 40 New Apartment Units with Conditions
The Planning Commission approved a site plan for AMG Apartment Management's "Maple Village of Southgate" project, which will add 40 additional multi-family apartment units at 15685 GD Road. The approval is subject to several conditions, including site access and circulation approvals from the fire department and city engineer, clarification of pedestrian connections, city engineer approval of utilities and lighting, and approval of building materials by the city building department. Additionally, cross-pedestrian signage, striping, and speed bumps were required.
City to Replace Water Heaters in Police Department and Courthouse
The city plans to use Quint Plumbing to relocate and replace water heaters in the police department and the 28th District Court building. The existing 80-gallon tanks will be replaced with wall-mounted, on-demand vented heaters due to their proximity to sensitive electronic equipment and limited space. The old tanks will be retained by the city for use as replacements in other city complex locations. The electrical repair work in February identified the need for these relocations.
