Sustainability Advisory Board Outlines Priorities and Highlights Community Successes
The Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB) and Climate Smart Community Task Force presented their priorities and activities to the Board of Trustees. The SAB, a volunteer board established in March, focuses on environmental stewardship, community well-being, and economic vitality by supporting the board through research, analysis, community outreach, and recommendations. Their work is organized around five strategic priorities: climate adaptation and resilience planning; sustainable municipal operations and cost-effective improvements; enhancing community well-being through parks, trees, and green spaces; identifying practical improvements through targeted street and public space enhancements; and community sustainability and resilience education. These priorities are advanced through the Climate Smart Communities certification process, resident outreach and engagement, and partnerships with community organizations. The board highlighted successes in composting, with residents diverting nearly 330 tons of food scraps since 2021, making Pelham a high-performing municipality in Westchester. They also discussed the Liberty Tree Initiative, a collaborative effort commemorating America's 250th anniversary through the planting of native, climate-resilient trees, involving multiple local entities and aiming for community planting events in October and a seedling giveaway in April 2027. Partnerships with organizations like Ecopel, the Junior League, and Sustainable Westchester were detailed, focusing on amplifying existing efforts and increasing efficiency. The SAB aims to make Pelham healthier, more resilient, connected, and enjoyable while supporting responsible resource stewardship. The board also discussed opportunities to incorporate sustainable features into future infrastructure projects, such as flood mitigation and road restorations, citing examples from other municipalities like Kingston, NY.
