Estate of Former Teacher Jeffrey Amdur Donates Generously to Establish Scholarship Fund
The Board of Education accepted a significant donation from the estate of the late Jeffrey Amdur. The donation establishes a scholarship fund for Arundle High School graduates pursuing higher education at Loyola University, Mr. Amdur's alma mater. Mr. Amdur was a dedicated educator, mentor, and community member who taught world languages at Arundle High School for 24 years and was an announcer and scorekeeper for local athletics. The donation is considered one of the most substantial ever made to an AACPS school and is expected to impact students for generations.
Board Approves FY2027 Operating Budget with Increased TSA Pay and Greenhouse Renovation
The Board of Education approved the fiscal year 2027 operating budget, which includes an $18 an hour pay rate for temporary support assistants (TSAs) and a renovation for the Southern High School greenhouse. The budget also involves a hiring freeze for central office positions and the reallocation of 51.5 general education positions to fund special education roles. The county council increased the budget by nearly $74 million, bringing the total to approximately $1.1 billion.
Board Approves FY2027 Capital Budget with Funding for New Fieldhouses and School Studies
The Board of Education approved the fiscal year 2027 capital budget, which includes increased funding for various projects. Notable allocations include $1.275 million for feasibility studies for six schools (Arundle Middle, Glendale Elementary, Riviera Beach Elementary, Chesapeake Bay Middle, Bodkin Elementary, and Vanbachan Elementary), $250,000 for a feasibility study at Ruth Parker E., $500,000 for Southern High School team rooms, $328,000 for MacArthur Middle School projects, and $3.9 million for fieldhouse construction at Chesapeake High School and Arundle High School. The county council increased the total capital budget by $6,253,000. Vehicle replacement funding was not allocated for this cycle, but existing funds are expected to bridge the gap.
Board Ratifies FY2027 Contracts for Multiple Employee Units, Including Teachers and Support Staff
The Board of Education ratified negotiated agreements for fiscal year 2027 with several employee units. Unit 1 (Teachers Association of Anna County - TAC) received a step increase, a 2.25% cost of living adjustment, establishment of a professional trade educator salary scale, modifications to the severe cases provision, and a 4-day work week for a portion of the summer. Unit 2 (Association of Education Leaders - AEL) received a step equivalent increase, a cost of living adjustment, and a 4-day work week for the summer. Unit 3 (American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees - AFSCME Local 1693) received a step increase and a 2.25% cost of living adjustment, continuing the 4-day work week. Unit 4 (Secretaries and Assistance Association of Anna Ronda County - SEAK) received a revised agreement including a step increase and a 2.25% cost of living adjustment. Unit 5 (non-represented) and Unit 6 (non-represented) employees will also receive a step equivalent increase, a 2.25% cost of living adjustment, and a 4-day work week for the summer. All agreements were ratified by their respective unions and approved by the board.
