Youth Hockey Donation, Golf Course Parking Lease, and Gymnastics Program Relocation Approved
The Armstrong Cooper Youth Hockey Association donated $5,000 to the ICE Arena to help with maintenance and upkeep. Over the past 15 years, this association has donated $83,000. The city is also approving a lease agreement for part of the golf course parking lot to be used for overnight parking by residents of the Ironwood luxury apartments, which are being sold. The gymnastics program will move from Sandberg Middle School to Elam Lutheran Church in Robbinsdale due to the school district closing buildings, with the council needing to formally approve this lease. The city pool hosted a swim meet for the New Hope Swim Club and has begun swimming lessons. The performance center will host the Adams Family Musical in July. The golf course is experiencing high activity with leagues and rented patio space for events. The Ice Arena is also busy with youth camps and rental groups, attracting national tournaments. Various park and recreation programs, including youth t-ball, pitch by coach leagues, and summer playground programs, are active in neighborhood parks.
Police Chief Honored; Body Camera Program Transitioning; New Hires and Officer Candidates
Chief Tim Hoyt of the New Hope Police Department will receive the Timothy Bow Memorial Award for his professionalism, dedication, and community service. The police department is transitioning to a new body-worn camera and squad camera program through Axon, with full equipment transition expected by the end of July, aiming to enhance transparency for officers and the community. Additionally, the personnel board has certified candidates for police officer and community service officer positions, who will proceed to interviews with the city manager and chief of police.
Renovation of Rusco Building, Rave Awards Nominations Open, Business Networking Event Scheduled
Plans have been submitted to renovate the old Minnesota Rusco building by Maverick Cutting and Breaking, a company specializing in concrete sawing and drilling, aiming to bring the building back into use. The city is also promoting the Rave Awards, recognizing residential property improvements, with nominations due by July 24th. The Business Networking Group will host an event on July 1st at Cullen's Ice Cream, bringing together business owners from New Hope and Crystal to discuss trends and needs. Proposals for scattered site housing at 4632 Flag and 5411 Xylon are due today, with demolition bids for 5426 Virginia also due today, and these items will be presented at the July 27th EDA meeting. Permits have been submitted for new homes at 3865 Jordan, 4973 Wisconsin, and 5401 Sumter. Two homes constructed through the scattered site program, at 5416 Virginia Avenue North and 7205 62nd Avenue North, are nearing completion and are either pending sale or posted for sale. Habitat for Humanity closed on a property at 4973 Yukon Avenue North, and the EDA has authorized the purchase of 5426 Zylon. The city website has information on upcoming elections and the farmers market.
City Council to Interview Commission Candidates; Police and Public Works Staffing Updates
The city council will conduct interviews for commission openings and potentially announce new members during the council meeting. Additionally, the city is working on hiring new police officers and community service officers, with candidates certified by the personnel board moving to interviews with the city manager and chief of police. New maintenance workers and a police officer have also started with the city, undergoing orientation. The police department is transitioning to a new body-worn camera and squad camera program through Axon, aiming for full equipment transition by the end of July.
Permits to be Revoked for Former Gill Brothers Site; Land Use Applications Received
A public hearing will be held regarding the former Gill Brothers site. The council plans to revoke the site plan review for any changes to this property, as the previous plans for a grocery store and adult daycare at 7342nd Avenue North were not acted upon within the allotted timeframes, and further extensions were not granted. The property has looked shabby and required city attention for maintenance. It is understood that the property will likely be sold to another business. Additionally, a request for a deck setback variance at 4637 Aquila Avenue North and a conditional use permit for parking deferment at 4300 Quebec have been submitted.
