Nantucket Select Board - June 24, 2026

Resident Alleges Damage from Surfside Crossing Development, Demands Stop-Work Order
During public comment, a resident raised serious concerns about the Surfside Crossing 40B development, reporting that neighboring homes are shaking and experiencing permanent damage due to construction activities. The resident urged the Select Board, as sewer commissioners, to issue a stop-work order and an eviction to Surfside Crossing, citing testimony from a town expert that the development is using the town's sewer easement for private use, which interferes with town property rights.
Select Board Debates Residential Property Tax Exemption
The Select Board held a preliminary discussion regarding the residential exemption, exploring its mechanics, impact on the tax rate, and potential adjustments. The current exemption is set at 25%, with a maximum allowed of 50%. The discussion included examples of how different property values are affected by various exemption levels, highlighting that lower to moderately valued owner-occupied homes benefit most. Concerns were raised about ensuring compliance with residency requirements and the broader implications of the exemption on the tax burden for non-recipients and renters. The board plans to continue this discussion through the fall.
Resident Questions Vineyard Wind Turbine Operational Status
The Select Board heard a public comment expressing concern about the operational status of the Vineyard Wind turbines. The resident questioned the reported energy output, citing personal observations of a low percentage of turbines actively spinning, and requested a report on actual power generation versus capacity, including whether turbines are consuming power for their own navigation lights. The resident also inquired about potential issues if full capacity is not being met, noting that the project was reported as complete over a year ago.
Alter Rock Property Conveyed to Nantucket Conservation Foundation
The Select Board discussed a proposal for the conveyance of a parcel of land known as Alter Rock, located at 50 Alter Rock Road, from the Town of Nantucket to the Nantucket Conservation Foundation (NCF). This transfer is part of an agreement that also includes the town conveying a permanent easement for an access road benefiting Sheep Pond Road residents. Concerns were raised by a board member about ensuring the road remains accessible to vehicles in perpetuity, given past instances of road closures by NCF. NCF representatives confirmed that the existing stipulation in the deed, which grants the town rights to use the road as shown on the plan, remains in effect and that access to critical areas is maintained.
Fire Engine Borrowing Term Extended to 20 Years
The Select Board approved a request to extend the statutory borrowing term for the replacement of a fire engine from five years to twenty years. This adjustment is necessary because fire trucks have a longer useful life than the standard five-year term allowed for departmental equipment. The new fire engine, an Oshkosh model, is currently being built and is expected to be delivered in the coming months. This approval allows the town to finance the purchase over a more appropriate timeframe.
