Town Officials Acknowledge Heroic Efforts in Tragic Incident, Address Staffing Shortages for Seasonal Water Safety
The Town Manager provided an update on a tragic swimming incident, acknowledging the heroic efforts of the Fire Department, Police Department, Department of Natural Resources, and Harbor Master's office. Efforts are underway to investigate the circumstances and explore measures to prevent future tragedies, although not all can be prevented. The town is facing challenges with staffing for local ponds and beaches due to difficulties in recruitment and retention of seasonal employees, a problem also noted at the state level. Some beaches may not be fully staffed throughout the summer. [cite: 1749-1907].
Aquaculture Permit Revoked for Health and Safety Violations
The Select Board voted to revoke aquaculture grant number 14 permit from Jal Quantero (also referred to as Jouo Citario) due to "egregious" violations that posed health and safety concerns. The Shellfish Commission recommended the revocation after an investigation. This is the first instance of such serious violations, and the department determined revocation was necessary rather than a warning. The decision was unanimous among the board members. [cite: 630-782].
Christine Foster Appointed to Human Services Committee
The Select Board appointed Christine Foster as the recreational department representative to the Human Services Committee. [cite: 1332-1337].
Select Board Approves Release of $25,000 Surety Bond for 1056 Enterprises, Inc.
The Select Board approved the release of a $25,000 surety bond, including accrued interest, to Jack Carter, President of 1056 Enterprises, Inc. The bond had been held for approximately ten years. As the business has closed, the surety bond is no longer needed. [cite: 1299-1329].
Select Board Denies Mass DOT Request for Route 28 Construction Extension During Summer
The Select Board discussed and voted to deny a request from Mass DOT for an extended construction work schedule on Route 28. The request was for work between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., expected to last 4 days, during the summer construction moratorium period (Memorial Day to Labor Day). Concerns were raised about the impact on traffic, businesses, and resident frustration, especially following issues on Route 151. The board felt the state could potentially override their decision but wanted to formally deny the request based on their policy and public complaints. [cite: 1148-1287].
