Decision on Mobile Rogers School Bell Postponed for Insurance and Logistics Review
The Select Board discussed the proposal to make the Rogers School Bell mobile for use in parades and town events. The Historical Commission, which researched the feasibility, presented questions about pursuing the project. Concerns were raised regarding insurance coverage, transportation logistics (requiring a town employee vs. volunteer), storage, and the bell's value. The board decided to postpone a decision until the next meeting to allow for further investigation into insurance details and to develop a protocol for the bell's use.
Select Board Appoints Representatives to Regional Transit and Planning Organizations
The Select Board appointed Natalie Mellow as the Select Board Representative for the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA). Mr. Saunders, the previous representative, could not attend meetings due to work conflicts. Mellow agreed to serve, acknowledging potential scheduling conflicts but committing to do her best. The board also appointed Michael Chapillo as the Select Board Representative for SERPED (Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District) and SMMPO (Southeastern Massachusetts Metropolitan Planning Organization), accepting the role despite its demanding schedule.
Academy Building Approved for Summer Art Exhibit
The Select Board approved a request from the Historical Commission and Historical Society to use the Academy building for a summer art exhibit by Susan Darwin. The exhibit is scheduled for June 27th, July 11th, July 18th, and July 25th, 2026. Darwin had initially sought approval from the Historical Society but brought the request to the Select Board, as they hold the final authority. Darwin expressed enthusiasm for using the space, and the board unanimously approved the request, noting the benefit of increased traffic to the town.
Town Receives Additional Funding for Sidewalks and Storm Costs; Tax Title Properties and Public Safety Building Process Update
The Town Administrator reported that Fairhaven will receive an additional $100,000 for sidewalk improvements and $217,474 for winter storm costs through the supplemental budget process. The town is also working on disposing of tax-title properties, with a new state law requiring properties to be listed with a real estate agent for a year before auction if not retained by the town. The town is also moving forward with creating an RFP for public safety building exploration, complying with state law, and has made a conditional offer for a new planner position.
Select Board Enters Correspondence on Public's Right and Budget Balance into Record
The Select Board received correspondence regarding the town's financial situation, including an email from Michelle Coston titled 'The public's right, a need for balance.' The board entered this correspondence into the record.
