The "Wish You Were Here" exhibit, a personal project self-funded by Stephanie Calabrese and Noxie LaRue, ran for three months in downtown Monroe, exploring the past, present, and future of the community through photographs, historical documents, and resident interviews. The exhibit aimed to capture the evolution of Monroe, the integration period, and the sense of community. Data was collected from 176 map pins and 253 postcards, revealing themes of nostalgia, hope for diversity and inclusion, and concerns about future growth, affordability, and parking. Recommendations included a Carver High School preservation study, an inclusive housing plan, and a parking task force.
City Approves $254,947 for Local Road Maintenance Projects
The city council approved the Local Road Assistance Administration Funds for 2026, totaling $254,947.16 from GDOT. These funds are for road work and do not require a local match. The main project will be on Vine Street from Panel Road to the city limits, utilizing a new 'permaflex OGI' material for enhanced durability due to truck traffic. Other work includes an overlay on Henson Drive and patching in the Gatewood subdivision and on Administration Drive.
City Recognizes Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution for America 250 Efforts
The city council acknowledged and celebrated the efforts of the George Walton chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Matthew Talbot chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in promoting America 250. The Sons of the American Revolution presented a recognition statement, and the Mayor issued a proclamation honoring the semi-quincentennial anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Sheriff Praises Improved Sheriff's Office and Police Department Relations
