P.V. Dove Field to be Renamed Tom Webb Field in Honor of Community Pillar
Councilman Dion proposed renaming P.V. Dove Field to Tom Webb Field at P.V. Dove Park. The proposal, brought forward by the Rotary Club and Tom Webb's family, honors Webb's significant involvement and mentorship within the community, particularly his coaching in the Little League program. Council members expressed strong support, remembering Webb as a pillar of the community and acknowledging his substantial impact and involvement in various city initiatives, including the country club. A motion was passed to direct staff to proceed with the renaming process, including creating signage.
Albert Sandoval Sworn In as Miami Springs Police Chief
Albert Sandoval was officially sworn in as the new Chief of Police for the City of Miami Springs. The ceremony was attended by city officials, residents, and law enforcement colleagues. Mayor Fahed and City Manager JC highlighted Sandoval's dedication, leadership, and deep connection to the Miami Springs community, emphasizing his lifelong residency and commitment to service. Sandoval expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to lead the department with accountability, visibility, and community engagement. The event also included acknowledgments of retired personnel and distinguished guests. A congratulatory certificate was presented by a representative from County Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis's office.
City Council Considers New Resident Welcome Guide to Improve Information Access
Councilman Perez Crespo proposed the creation and publishing of a welcome guide for new residents. The guide aims to educate newcomers about city ordinances, such as tree canopy regulations, permitting processes, and community policing initiatives like the block watch program. The guide would also include contact information for city staff and departments. Perez Crespo suggested distributing these guides with certificates of occupancy and potentially including local business coupons. Assistant City Manager Omar noted that staff, in collaboration with Chief Sandoval and Lieutenant Ronnie Gonzalez, has already begun drafting such a guide, which will be available digitally and in print at various city locations. The guide is intended for both new and existing residents to stay informed about city services and regulations.
Resident Argues Against Development, Cites Missed Hotel Revenue Opportunities
During the open forum, Ivan Danilo Garcia, a homeowner at 1265 Thrush Avenue, raised concerns regarding the proposed development on Northwest 36th Street. He argued that the city is overlooking significant revenue streams from a luxury hotel, such as commercial property taxes, utility taxes, business tax receipts, zoning permits, and impact fees, in favor of solely focusing on the lost 6% bed tax. Garcia pointed to the new PS Miami private luxury terminal opening nearby as an opportunity to attract high-net-worth clientele with premium accommodations and services, suggesting that FAA height limits (12 stories/120 ft) are sufficient for a boutique hotel, restaurants, and convention space. He believes the city can gain revenue without adding density and urged council members to find alternative solutions.
David Olivas Honored for 25 Years of Service in Public Works
David Olivas was recognized with an employee service award for 25 years of service to the City of Miami Springs. He works as a public works maintenance worker in the maintenance and streets department. His director, Juan Peña, praised his reliability, ability to operate any equipment, and willingness to take on tasks and direction. Olivas expressed gratitude to the residents for their support, especially during storms.
