City Reminds Residents of Alternate Side Irrigation Policy to Conserve Water
David Schofield reiterated the city's policy on alternate side lawn irrigation to conserve water. Residents with even-numbered addresses can water on even days, and odd-numbered addresses on odd days. This policy helps manage peak water usage, especially during holidays and dry periods. The water levels had been a concern two weeks prior but have since returned to normal thanks to compliance with these restrictions. Schofield plans to propose making this policy permanent in the coming months.
Mayor Announces Upcoming Community Events and Initiatives
Mayor Hargrove announced several upcoming community events and initiatives. These include the Chief Hollister's 36-year anniversary, the grand reopening of the Wakanda basketball and pickleball courts on June 19th, the Junior Mustang softball tournament, and the Murals and Menominee event from June 24th-28th. Additionally, proactive rental inspections and NSAID programs begin July 1st, and a draft I-4 ordinance is expected in August for council review.
City Council Approves Art Market on 2nd Street East
The City Council approved a special event request for an art market on 2nd Street East, from Main Street East to the mid-block between Maple Tanner and Cobblestone driveways. The event, organized by Murals and Menominee, is scheduled for June 25th-27th, 2026. The street will be closed at both ends, with vendors set up in the road. Driveways to Cobblestone and Maple Tanner will remain open. Porta-potties will be provided. Approval was contingent upon receipt of proof of insurance. Concerns were raised about overnight security and whether art would be removed nightly.
City Council Approves Sewer Utility's 2025 Annual Report, Addresses Phosphorus Compliance
The City Council approved Resolution 2026-18, the sewer utility's 2025 compliance maintenance annual report. The report showed the utility received an 'A' in most categories, but a 'C' for phosphorus removal, consistent with the previous year. This 'C' grade is partially attributed to fats, oils, and greases from ConAgra, which is installing a DAF system to address this. The reactive sand filters are not operating as intended due to the C's wastewater composition, and the city is awaiting the DAF installation before increasing chemical treatment. The city received a letter of reprimand for phosphorus removal but has agreed on a schedule for optimization, with improved results expected in the 2027 report.
City Council Approves Purchase of New Water Department Pickup Truck
The City Council considered and approved the Water Department's request to purchase a new 2026 Ford F-150 pickup truck for $42,795 from North Town Ford. This purchase is necessary to maintain the department's truck supply in compliance with PSC regulations, as existing trucks reach 14 years or 70,000 miles. The old truck will be transferred to the street department.
