Resident Raises Concerns About Residential LED Lighting; Zoning Review to Consider Criteria
During the public comment period, a resident raised concerns about excessive lighting from LED lights on a fence at a Black Rock Road property, which remained on continuously and impacted neighbors. While acknowledging this situation is now resolved due to new trees, the resident requested that zoning considerations include criteria against large LED lights on residential streets. The board indicated this is something they can investigate further as part of their ongoing zoning review.
Seniors' 250th Celebration Set; Airport Noise Concerns Addressed; Park Boards Seek Members
Supervisor Reese reported on several community activities and board activities. Seniors will celebrate the 250th anniversary on June 9th at the community center. The Mercer, Trenton Mercer Airport Review Board is working with other townships along the river to address Hopewell's request to restrict flight school operations to the Pennsylvania side. Reese plans to meet with Mercer County Commissioners regarding this issue. Parks and Recreation is seeking new members, and the Golf Committee is scheduled to meet soon.
Resident Urges Support for State Legislation Moratorium on Data Centers
Luke Butler, a resident, informed the board about State Senator Katie Mooth's Senate Bill 1359, which proposes a three-year moratorium on hyperscale data centers. He urged the board, individually or as a group, to communicate their support for this legislation to state representatives. Butler suggested this could provide the township with breathing room to address data centers within its own zoning while offering legal cover at the state level. The board acknowledged this information and indicated they would look into it.
9/11 Remembrance Ceremony Debate Continues Amidst Rosh Hashanah Conflict
The Board of Supervisors heard public comments regarding the 9/11 Remembrance and Light ceremony, specifically concerning its conflict with Rosh Hashanah. Multiple speakers, including Jewish community members and rabbis, expressed that observant Jews did not request the ceremony be denied and that remembrance, mourning, and compassion are consistent with Jewish values and Rosh Hashanah. Several speakers, including a 9/11 widow and the sister of a victim, shared personal stories and emphasized the need for a place to gather for remembrance and healing. The township manager and supervisors discussed potential accommodations, such as an earlier start time for the ceremony and concluding formal elements by sunset, allowing for quiet reflection afterward. Concerns were raised about the feasibility of such a condensed schedule and the township's previous handling of permits for the event and the Garden of Reflection organization. The discussion also touched upon the 'long and difficult story' behind the conflict, with some speakers feeling transparency was lacking. The supervisors stated they had heard conflicting religious leader opinions and were trying to navigate the situation.
